Ebook About
The dazzling first novel from the best-selling, Booker Prize-Winning author of The Line of Beauty and The Sparsholt Affair. An enthralling, darkly erotic novel of homosexuality before the scourge of AIDS; an elegy, possessed of chilling clarity, for ways of life that can no longer be lived with impunity. The Swimming-Pool Library focuses on the friendship of two men: William Beckwith, a young gay aristocrat who leads a life of privilege and promiscuity, and Lord Nantwich, an elderly man searching for someone to write his biography and inherit his traditions.

Book The Swimming-Pool Library (Vintage International) Review :

This book was highly regarded and recommended somewhere in my continuing quest to read every list of suggested new books. I gave it two stars because the author is talented, and his descriptions are sometimes wonderful. But, overall, the book was a huge disappointment, and I simply couldn't finish it. How many times and ways can one describe a penis: flaccid, semi hard, silky, long, short or, well, you get the idea-- Mr. Hollinghurst is definitely in the running for setting a record. So, I could even have lived with the soft porn effect and kept reading because of the literary skill, but, ultimately, not only are almost all the characters unlikable, the narrator is completely self centered and wildly unsympathetic. Finally, the boring repitition of the sexual conquests and the uninteresting journals of the story inside the story were way too much to overcome. How, I wonder, does a book like this get such rave reviews? Oh well, different strokes for different folks....pun intended.
Typically of Hollinghurst's fiction, "The Swimming-Pool Library" promises more than it delivers. Its protagonist, William Beckwith, is a narcissistic sensualist who believes that every man he finds attractive must be frantic to be with him. But he is the typical Hollinghurst character, existing somewhere between self-love and self-parody. These characters seem at times to be objects of satire, but the author insists on taking his readers through repetitiously tedious sexual encounters where self-gratification crowds out satiric intent. The plot is like having cocktail snacks: nothing sustains, nothing much stays with the reader. Everyone is too-too, and virtually all of them are interchangeable and, ultimately, forgettable. The dialog and often descriptive passages are arch and snobbish in tone; the speaker (and the writer?) seem to suffer from terminal ennui. Why Hollinghurst has garnered the praise he has is a mystery even deeper than the central mystery of "The Swimming-Pool Library" that, when revealed, turns out to be of interest to shallow Will and his even shallower acquaintances and "friends." If your taste is for canapes and mixed nuts at cocktail time, you may enjoy this book. If you're a more serious reader, turn your attention elsewhere.
